Aydin Mohseni

Aydin Mohseni is an assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Philosophy who studies AI safety, agency, alignment, and value learning. He studied interactive media and formal philosophy before completing a doctorate at UC Irvine in 2021 and holding research posts at Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania. With Travis LaCroix, he coauthored The Tragedy of the AI Commons in 2020, using evolutionary game theory to study cooperation in ethical AI development. In 2025, he and Alex John London released Learning the Value of Value Learning, which extends decision theory to changes in an agent’s values.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    Graduate study at Irvine

In 2016, he is a first-year student in logic and philosophy of science at UC Irvine. Before doctoral study, he earns a bachelor of fine arts in interactive media at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, works in industry, and completes a master’s degree in logic, computation and methodology at Carnegie Mellon University.

  2. 2020

    Cooperation in AI development

With Travis LaCroix, he releases The Tragedy of the AI Commons as a preprint in 2020. The paper uses evolutionary game theory to model incentives for cooperation in ethical AI development and examines conditions that can sustain cooperation.

  3. 2021–2022

    A doctorate and Pittsburgh fellowship

In 2021, he completes a doctorate in UC Irvine’s Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, supervised by Simon Huttegger and Cailin O’Connor. From 2021 to 2022, he is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Philosophy of Science.

  4. 2022–2024

    Research fellow at Pennsylvania

From 2022 to 2024, he works as a research fellow in the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Philosophy.

    Assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon

In 2024, he joins Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Philosophy as an assistant professor.

  6. 2025

    A theorem for value learning

In November 2025, he and Alex John London release the preprint Learning the Value of Value Learning. Their work extends the Jeffrey–Bolker decision framework to model changes in values and proves a theorem about the value of refining those values.

  7. As of October 2026
