Antal van den Bosch

Also known as Antal P. J. van den Bosch, A. P. J. van den Bosch

Antal van den Bosch is a professor of language, communication and computation at Utrecht University, where he works on memory-based language models that he presents as an eco-friendly alternative to neural networks. He took a master's degree in 1992 and a doctorate in 1997, and he was named professor of memory, language and meaning at Tilburg University in 2008. He became professor of example-based language modelling at Radboud University Nijmegen in 2011, and in 2012 the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences made him a member. In 2020 he took a special chair in language and artificial intelligence at the University of Amsterdam, and from July 2023 to June 2026 he chaired the Social Sciences and Humanities domain of NWO, the Dutch Research Council. By 2026 he is a fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence.

  1. 1992–1997

    A master's and a doctorate

    He takes a master's degree in 1992 and a doctorate in 1997.

  2. 1997–2008

    Postdoc and chair at Tilburg

    He returns to Tilburg University as a postdoc and is named professor of memory, language and meaning in 2008.

  3. 2011–2012

    A professorship in Nijmegen

    He becomes professor of example-based language modelling at Radboud University Nijmegen in 2011. In 2012 he joins the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences as a member.

  4. 2020

    A special chair in Amsterdam

    He takes a special chair in Language and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Amsterdam in 2020, and he combines it with directing the Meertens Institute.

  5. July 2023–June 2026

    Chairing an NWO domain

    In July 2023 he joins the Executive Board of NWO, the Dutch Research Council, and he chairs its Social Sciences and Humanities domain until June 2026.

  6. October 2025

    Olifant, a memory-based model

    In October 2025 he and four co-authors submit a paper that presents memory-based language modeling, implemented as Olifant, as an efficient, eco-friendly alternative to deep neural networks.

  7. By 2026

    A EurAI fellowship

    By 2026 he is a fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, an honour that recognizes sustained contributions to AI in Europe.

  8. Since 2026

    Vice-dean at Utrecht

    He is a professor of language, communication and computation at Utrecht University, and since 2026 he is also vice-dean of research and impact in the Faculty of Humanities.
