Andrew W. Moore
Andrew W. Moore is a machine-learning researcher with a career across universities and industry. His Cambridge doctoral work studied robot control, followed by robot-learning research at MIT. At Carnegie Mellon he founded the Auton Lab and worked on statistical algorithms and applications. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 2005. He joined Google in 2006 to build its Pittsburgh engineering office, where teams worked on advertising, shopping and related systems. He returned to CMU as computer science dean from 2014 to 2018.

Timeline
-
Education and early research
Learning to control robots
Moore studied mathematics and computer science at Cambridge and developed machine-learning approaches to robot control in his doctorate. He then held a postdoctoral position in Chris Atkeson’s MIT group, working on robot juggling, manipulation and regression methods for precise tasks.

Faculty career through 2000
Building statistical research
At Carnegie Mellon, Moore worked on machine learning, reinforcement learning and statistical methods. He built the Auton Lab and was tenured in 2000. His collaborative work included applications in manufacturing, astronomy, health records and other settings; the methods and deployments were team work.

2005–2006
Recognition and industrial engineering
AAAI elected Moore a Fellow in 2005 for machine learning, data mining and transferring statistical AI into use. In 2006 he joined Google to build its Pittsburgh engineering office. Teams at the office worked on advertising, shopping, fraud detection and distributed systems.
