Ananya Uppal
Ananya Uppal is a machine-learning researcher whose work connects statistical theory with density estimation and generative models. She coauthored studies of adversarial density estimation, GAN convergence and robust estimation from 2018 to 2020, and completed a PhD at Carnegie Mellon in 2021. In Spring 2022, she joined the Simons Institute's Learning and Games program as a research fellow and coauthored a NeurIPS workshop paper on contrastive learning. Her 2023 NeurIPS work studies how to learn conditional generative models in total variation. As of October 2026, she is a postdoctoral researcher at UT Austin's Institute for the Foundations of Machine Learning.

Timeline
-
2018
Adversarial density estimation
Her research studies statistical machine learning and the theory of learning algorithms. In 2018, she coauthors a paper on minimax convergence rates for nonparametric density estimation under adversarial losses, including Wasserstein and total variation, with implications for training deep ReLU GANs.
-
2019
A NeurIPS honorable mention
In 2019, she coauthors a NeurIPS paper on density-estimation convergence rates under Besov IPM losses. Its results give statistical error bounds for GANs, and the work receives an honorable mention for NeurIPS's Outstanding Paper Award.
-
2020
Robust density estimation
In 2020, she coauthors a study of nonparametric density estimation under the Huber contamination model, deriving minimax results under Besov IPM losses. The paper shows that some GAN architectures are robustly minimax optimal.
-
2021
A Carnegie Mellon PhD
At Carnegie Mellon, she completes a PhD in 2021 with a dissertation on nonparametric density estimation under dual Besov norms. Barnabás Póczos advises her, and she takes a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin.
-
2022
Simons research fellowship
During Spring 2022, she is a research fellow in the Simons Institute's Learning and Games program. Her research examines statistical aspects of machine learning and the mathematics of optimization.
-
2022
Contrastive learning at NeurIPS
At the NeurIPS 2022 Self-Supervised Learning: Theory and Practice workshop, she coauthors “Lovasz Theta Contrastive Learning” with Georgios Smyrnis, Matt Jordan, Giannis Daras and Alex Dimakis.
-
2023
Conditional generative models
Her 2023 NeurIPS paper shows how to learn a one-layer ReLU conditional generative model in total variation. With access to a deep model's internal activations, its one-layer guarantee can be composed to learn the deep model using a near-linear number of samples.
-
As of October 2026
Postdoctoral researcher at IFML
As of October 2026, she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for the Foundations of Machine Learning at UT Austin. She studies statistical aspects of machine learning and explores the mathematics of optimization techniques.
