Researcher

Alex Rogers

Alex Rogers is a computer scientist whose work applies AI and machine learning to energy management, sensing and environmental monitoring. After studying physics at Durham, working in oilfields and earning a computer science PhD, he worked at BiosGroup before returning to academia at Southampton. His work includes a smartphone app and hidden Markov detector for cicada monitoring, a bounded-bandit method for crowdsourcing, and the AudioMoth acoustic device; his expert-crowdsourcing paper shared the Artificial Intelligence Journal’s 2021 Prominent Paper Award. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Computer Science at Oxford, a Tutorial Fellow at St Anne’s College and a Co-Director of the AIMS CDT.

Timeline

  1. By 2006

    A PhD in computer science

After studying physics at Durham and working five years in oilfields as a Schlumberger wireline logging engineer, he pursues a Computer Science PhD that applies statistical physics to models of evolving populations. He then works at BiosGroup before returning to academia at Southampton, where he is a Lecturer in Computer Science from 2006.

  2. 2012

    A smartphone cicada detector

He and Southampton’s Agents, Interaction and Complexity group develop a smartphone app to detect the New Forest cicada’s high-pitched song.

  3. 2013

    Professor at Southampton

He becomes Professor of Computer Science at Southampton in 2013 and helps lead the Agents, Interaction and Complexity Group’s intelligent energy-management research. The group develops tools that let users shift electricity use to off-peak times and use energy more effectively.

  4. 2014

    A hidden Markov cicada detector

He coauthors a hidden Markov model-based acoustic cicada detector for crowdsourced smartphone biodiversity monitoring.

  5. 2014

    Crowdsourcing with bounded bandits

He coauthors Efficient Crowdsourcing of Unknown Experts using Bounded Multi-Armed Bandits, a sequential decision model with performance guarantees for task allocation.

  6. 2018

    The AudioMoth research paper

He coauthors a study evaluating AudioMoth, an acoustic device for monitoring biodiversity and the environment.

  7. 2021

    A Prominent Paper Award

He shares the 2021 Artificial Intelligence Journal Prominent Paper Award as a coauthor of Efficient Crowdsourcing of Unknown Experts using Bounded Multi-Armed Bandits.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and AIMS co-director

He is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at St Anne’s College. He is a Co-Director of the AIMS CDT and teaches Computer Architecture in Hilary Term 2026. His research applies AI and machine learning within physical sensor systems, with current work on smart building energy management and low-cost conservation technology.
