Alane Suhr
Alane Suhr is an assistant professor at UC Berkeley who studies how AI systems can use language to work with people. Her work included a 2017 visual reasoning dataset and a 2019 corpus that tested whether captions were true of photographs. She completed a computer science PhD at Cornell in 2022, worked on the Allen Institute for AI's Mosaic team, and joined Berkeley in July 2023. Her dissertation shared the 2022 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award and received an honorable mention for the 2022 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. In 2025, she coauthored SWE-Gym, an environment for training software engineering agents.

Timeline
-
2016
Computer science at Ohio State
She earns a BS in computer science and engineering with a minor in linguistics at Ohio State University in 2016.
-
2017
A visual reasoning corpus
With Mike Lewis, James Yeh, and Yoav Artzi, she coauthors “A Corpus of Natural Language for Visual Reasoning” in 2017. Its 92,244 examples pair natural language with synthetic images and require reasoning about visual scenes and sets.
-
2019
Reasoning about photographs
In 2019, she coauthors a corpus of 107,292 examples that pair English sentences with photographs. The task asks a system to decide whether a caption is true of two photographs, including reasoning about quantities and relationships.
-
2019
Instructions in collaborative games
She coauthors “Executing Instructions in Situated Collaborative Interactions” in 2019. The work builds a game environment for people and systems to act together, with methods for following instructions that contain several goals and recovering from errors.
-
2022
A doctorate and AI2 research
In 2022, she completes a computer science PhD at Cornell University, based at Cornell Tech in New York and advised by Yoav Artzi. After her doctorate, she spends about a year as a Young Investigator on the Allen Institute for AI's Mosaic team in Seattle, led by Yejin Choi.
-
2022
Two dissertation honours
Her dissertation, “Reasoning and Learning in Interactive Natural Language Systems,” receives the 2022 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award for algorithms that learn language through interaction. She shares the award with Erik Wijmans and receives an honorable mention for the 2022 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.
-
July 2023
Joining Berkeley EECS
In July 2023, she joins UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences as an assistant professor.
-
2025
Training agents with SWE-Gym
She coauthors the ICML 2025 paper “Training Software Engineering Agents and Verifiers with SWE-Gym.” The environment supplies 2,438 Python tasks with runnable code, tests, and instructions in natural language to train language model agents for software engineering.
-
2026
Teaching natural language processing
In 2026, she continues as an assistant professor in UC Berkeley's Division of Computer Science, EECS, and teaches natural language processing. Her research builds systems that learn and use language while collaborating with people.
