Abhirup Banerjee

Abhirup Banerjee is an Oxford researcher who applies artificial intelligence and computational modelling to cardiovascular diagnosis and care. He completed a computer science PhD in 2017 after degrees in Statistics and received the Indian Science Congress Association's Young Scientist Award in 2017; he coauthored machine-learning studies on SARS-CoV-2 blood tests and chest-X-ray diagnosis in 2020 and 2021. His current work builds cardiovascular digital twins from multimodal clinical data, and he provided technical leadership for a 2026 AI study of hypertension-related organ damage. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow at Oxford, where he leads the MultiMeDIA Lab.

Timeline

  1. 2017

    A computer science PhD

He completes a PhD in Computer Science in 2017 after earning BSc (Hons) and master's degrees in Statistics.

  2. 2017

    A Young Scientist Award

In 2017, he receives the Indian Science Congress Association's Young Scientist Award in its Section of Information and Communication Science & Technology, including Computer Sciences.

  3. 2020

    AI from full blood counts

In 2020, he coauthors a study that uses machine learning and an artificial neural network to identify SARS-CoV-2-positive patients from full blood counts without symptom or history data.

  4. 2021

    DenResCov-19 from chest X-rays

In 2021, he coauthors DenResCov-19, a deep transfer-learning pipeline for diagnosing COVID-19, pneumonia and tuberculosis from chest X-rays.

  5. July 2025

Building a digital heart with AI

The Royal Society schedules his talk Building a digital heart with AI for its Summer Science Exhibition on 6 July 2025; it explores how AI builds 3D and 4D heart models from medical scans and may personalise treatment.

  6. 2026

    HyperScore for organ damage

In 2026, he provides technical leadership for an Oxford AI study that develops HyperScore to assess hypertension-related organ damage across multiple body systems.

  7. 2026

    Associate Professor at Oxford

Oxford confers an Associate Professor title on him in 2026.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading the MultiMeDIA Lab

As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow at Oxford's Department of Engineering Science and a Principal Investigator at its Institute of Biomedical Engineering. He leads the MultiMeDIA Lab, which develops cardiovascular digital twins from multimodal clinical data through geometric deep learning and computational modelling for personalised diagnosis, risk prediction and image-guided interventions.
