Zbigniew Michalewicz
Zbigniew Michalewicz is a professor and entrepreneur whose research interests lie in machine learning and evolutionary computation. He completed an MSc at the Technical University of Warsaw in 1974 and a PhD at the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1981, then left Poland for New Zealand in 1982. From 1988 to 2004 he was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and his book Genetic Algorithms + Data Structures = Evolution Programs was published in 1992. He co-founded SolveIT Software in 2005 and Complexica, an artificial intelligence software company, in 2014; in 2019 he received the IEEE Pioneer Award for evolutionary computation research. As of October 2026 he is chief scientist at Complexica and emeritus professor at the University of Adelaide.
