Yizhou Yu
Yizhou Yu is a computer vision and computer graphics researcher whose work includes image-based modeling, deep saliency models, and clinical diagnostics. He completed a computer science PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, was a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 12 years, and received a US National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2002. He joined the University of Hong Kong in 2010, became a full professor in 2012, was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2019 for contributions to geometric and image-based modeling, and was named a 2022 ACM Fellow for contributions to computer graphics and computer vision. With Guanbin Li he introduced a multiscale deep saliency model at CVPR in 2015, and he co-authored a Nature Biomedical Engineering paper on a transformer model for clinical diagnostics and received HKU's 2024 Research Output Prize for that research. As of October 2026, he is a chair professor in the HKU School of Computing and Data Science and associate director of the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science.

Timeline
-
2000
A Berkeley computer science doctorate
He receives a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. He also holds a master's degree in applied mathematics and a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from Zhejiang University.
-
2002
A CAREER award at Illinois
He serves first as a tenure-track professor and then as a tenured professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 12 years. He receives a US National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2002.
-
2010–2012
Full professor in Hong Kong
He joins the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong in 2010 and is promoted to full professor with tenure in 2012.
-
2015
Multiscale saliency at CVPR
With Guanbin Li, he presents Visual Saliency Based on Multiscale Deep Features at CVPR in 2015. The paper uses multiscale features from convolutional neural networks for visual saliency.
-
2019
An IEEE Fellow
He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2019 for contributions to geometric and image-based modeling. Methods from appearance modeling papers in 1998 and 1999 are used in The Matrix and Mission: Impossible 2. A 2004 SIGGRAPH paper presents an editing technique based on gradient field manipulation.

2022
A 2022 ACM Fellow
He is named a 2022 ACM Fellow for contributions to computer graphics and computer vision.
-
2023–2024
Clinical diagnostics with transformers
In 2023 he co-authors a transformer-based representation-learning model that processes multimodal input in a unified manner, in work accepted by Nature Biomedical Engineering. He receives the 2024 Research Output Prize at HKU for this research.
-
As of October 2026
Chair professor at HKU
As of October 2026, he is associate director of the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science and a chair professor at the HKU School of Computing and Data Science.
