Researcher

Xingzhang Ren

Xingzhang Ren is a researcher whose work spans neural machine translation and the Qwen model family. They studied at Harbin Institute of Technology and Peking University, coauthored a 2021 study of low-frequency word prediction, and coauthored the 2023 report introducing Qwen. They later coauthored reports on Qwen2, Qwen2.5-1M and Qwen3, as well as work on Qwen3's audio and vision-language branches and 2026 data-selection and Qwen3.8 models. As of October 2026, they are a researcher at Alibaba Group.

Timeline

  1. 2021

    Study at Harbin and Peking

In 2021, Ren works as a researcher at Alibaba Group after studying as an undergraduate at Harbin Institute of Technology and as an MS student at Peking University.

  2. 2021–2023

    Translation research and Qwen

In 2021, they coauthor Frequency-Aware Contrastive Learning for Neural Machine Translation, which addresses low-frequency word prediction. In 2023, they coauthor Qwen Technical Report, introducing Qwen as the first installment of its large language model series.

  3. 2024

    The Qwen2 family

In 2024, they coauthor Qwen2 Technical Report. It introduces foundational and instruction-tuned language models from 0.5 to 72 billion parameters, with dense and mixture-of-experts designs.

  4. January 2025

    A million-token context window

In January 2025, they coauthor Qwen2.5-1M Technical Report, which introduces models that extend context length to one million tokens.

  5. May 2025

    The Qwen3 model family

In May 2025, they coauthor Qwen3 Technical Report. The model family includes dense and mixture-of-experts architectures from 0.6 to 235 billion parameters.

  6. September 2025–November 2025

    Qwen3 goes multimodal

In September 2025, they coauthor Qwen3-Omni, a single multimodal model for text, image, audio and video. In November 2025, they coauthor Qwen3-VL Technical Report on Qwen's vision-language model.

  7. February 2026

    Selecting data for pretraining

In February 2026, they coauthor OPUS, a data-selection framework for large language model pretraining. It defines data utility in the optimizer-induced update space.

  8. As of October 2026

    Researcher at Alibaba Group

As of October 2026, they are a researcher at Alibaba Group. In August 2026, they coauthor the Qwen3.8-Next architecture report, which describes model design and ablations. In September 2026, the Qwen Team lists them among contributors to Qwen3.8-Omni, a natively multimodal agent model.
