Researcher

Wei-Shi Zheng

Also known as Weishi Zheng, WeiShi Zheng, Jason Zheng, 郑伟诗

Wei-Shi Zheng studies person re-identification and action recognition. He completed a bachelor's degree in mathematics and applied mathematics and in computer science and technology at Sun Yat-sen University in 2003, a PhD in applied mathematics there in 2008, and a postdoctoral appointment in computer science at Queen Mary University of London that ran until December 2010. In 2009 his research proposed relative distance comparison for person re-identification, and in June 2015 he published Jointly Learning Heterogeneous Features for RGB-D Activity Recognition at CVPR with Jian-Fang Hu and Jianguo Zhang. He received a national Excellent Young Scientists award in 2015, a Royal Society Newton Advanced Fellowship in 2016, and a Changjiang Scholars distinguished professorship in 2022, and the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a fellow in 2024. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Sun Yat-sen University, director of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing, and associate dean of the university's Artificial Intelligence Institute.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2008

    Degrees at Sun Yat-sen

From September 1999 to June 2003 he completes a bachelor's degree at Sun Yat-sen University in mathematics and applied mathematics and in computer science and technology. He receives a PhD in applied mathematics there in June 2008, with the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006 and Hong Kong Baptist University in 2007.

  2. August 2008–December 2010

    A London postdoc

From August 2008 to December 2010 he is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London.

  3. 2008–2013

    Relative distance comparison

Since 2008 he works on person re-identification, matching the same person across non-overlapping camera views. In 2009 his research proposes relative distance comparison, and since 2013 the work also covers activity recognition and assessment.

  4. January 2011–January 2016

    Lecturer, then professor

In January 2011 he joins the School of Information Science and Technology at Sun Yat-sen University as a lecturer recruited under the university's Hundred Talents Program. In June 2012 he becomes an associate professor in that school, and in January 2016 he becomes a professor in the School of Computer Science, a post that continues.

  5. June 2015

    An RGB-D activity paper

With Jian-Fang Hu and Jianguo Zhang, he publishes Jointly Learning Heterogeneous Features for RGB-D Activity Recognition at CVPR in June 2015.

  6. 2015–2022

    National and Changjiang awards

In 2015 he receives the national Excellent Young Scientists award. In 2016 the Royal Society names him to a Newton Advanced Fellowship, and in 2022 the Ministry of Education names him a Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor.

  7. 2024

    An IAPR fellowship

In 2024 the International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a fellow for the contribution to person re-identification and action recognition.

  8. As of October 2026

    Director and associate dean

He is a professor at Sun Yat-sen University, director of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing, and associate dean of the university's Artificial Intelligence Institute. His research covers embodied intelligence and AI robotics learning, 3D modeling, generative AI, and video processing.
