Researcher

Thomas Quatieri

Also known as Thomas F. Quatieri, Quatieri Thomas

Thomas Quatieri is a senior member of the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he applies speech signal processing to health. His research uses vocal features to look for signs of depression, Parkinson's disease, and COVID-19. He earned his Tufts and MIT degrees between 1973 and 1979 and joined Lincoln Laboratory in 1980. In 1995 he shared the IEEE Baker Award, and in 1999 he became an IEEE Fellow. His team at the laboratory won the AVEC Depression Challenges in 2013 and 2014.

Timeline

  1. 1973–1979

    Degrees from Tufts and MIT

He graduates summa cum laude from Tufts University in 1973. MIT then confers SM, EE, and ScD degrees in 1975, 1977, and 1979.

  2. 1980

    Joining Lincoln Laboratory

In 1980 he joins MIT Lincoln Laboratory and holds an affiliate faculty position in the Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

  3. 1995

    The IEEE Baker Award

He shares the 1995 IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award with Petros Maragos and James Kaiser for contributions to speech signal processing.

  4. 1999

    An IEEE Fellow

The IEEE elects him a Fellow in 1999 for contributions to sinusoidal speech and audio modeling and nonlinear signal processing.

  5. 2012–2014

    Depression biomarkers and AVEC wins

With Nicolas Malyska, he publishes a study of vocal-source biomarkers for depression at Interspeech 2012. The Lincoln Laboratory team he leads wins the 2013 and 2014 AVEC Depression Challenges.

  6. 2016

    A neurophysiological vocal source model

A model of vocal source control appears at Interspeech 2016, written with Gregory Ciccarelli and Satrajit Ghosh. Its vocal features are applied to depression and Parkinson's disease as examples.

  7. July 2020

    A COVID-19 vocal biomarker study

In July 2020 Lincoln Laboratory announces that he and his team study vocal biomarkers for COVID-19. A technology letter describing this research is published in IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology.

  8. As of October 2026

Senior member of the technical staff

Currently, he is a senior member of the technical staff in the Human Health and Performance Systems Group at Lincoln Laboratory.
