Researcher

Thomas O. Binford

Thomas O. Binford is a computer vision researcher associated with Stanford. He published work on visual perception by computer in 1971 and inference of surfaces from images in 1981. The review surveys model-based image-analysis systems, evaluates progress toward general vision and discusses design principles. He is a Stanford emeritus professor of computer science.

Timeline

  1. 1971

    Visual perception by computer

Binford presented his conference work Visual Perception by Computer in 1971.

  2. 1981

    Study surface inference

He published Inferring Surfaces from Images in Artificial Intelligence in 1981. The article addresses recovering surface information from visual data.

  3. 1982

    Assess model-based vision systems

In Survey of Model-Based Image Analysis Systems, Binford reviews and critiques existing systems. He assesses progress toward general vision and describes design principles, making the organization of visual interpretation itself a research subject.

  4. As of October 2026

    Stanford emeritus professor

Thomas Binford is a Stanford professor of computer science, emeritus.
