Sudeep Sarkar

Sudeep Sarkar is a computer vision researcher at the University of South Florida. His work spans perceptual organization, segmentation and grouping, and gait recognition. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2008, and the IEEE named him one in 2013. From 2014, his research focused on neuro-symbolic formalisms for event understanding and computer vision. As of October 2026, he is the launch dean of the Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing, which USF established in 2024.

    Ohio State degrees, then USF

    He earns a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1988, then an M.S. in 1990 and a Ph.D. in 1993 from Ohio State. He joins the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of South Florida in 1993.

  2. 2008

    Fellow of the IAPR

    The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2008 for contributions to computer vision, particularly perceptual organization, segmentation and grouping, and to the evaluation of vision algorithms.

  3. 2013

    IEEE Fellow

    He is named an IEEE Fellow in 2013.

  4. 2014

    Neuro-symbolic event understanding

    From 2014, his research focuses on neuro-symbolic formalisms for AI, particularly event understanding and computer vision.

    Outstanding mentor award

    He receives a William R. Jones Outstanding Mentor Award in 2017.

  6. 2023

    ACM Distinguished Member

    ACM selects him as one of 52 Distinguished Members in 2023. His research ranges from AI involving images and videos to biometrics and gait recognition.

  7. March 2025

    Interim dean of the new college

    In March 2025, he is interim dean of the new Bellini College, which will serve as a central hub for foundational AI and cybersecurity research.
