Researcher

Stefano Soatto

Stefano Soatto is a computer vision and machine learning researcher whose work spans geometric reconstruction and applied AI services. He studied engineering at Padova, spent a year at UC Berkeley, and completed a PhD in control and dynamical systems at Caltech; his career then took him through Udine, Harvard, Washington University, and UCLA. His coauthored reconstruction paper won the 1999 David Marr Prize, and he was elected to the 2022 ACM Fellows class. At AWS, he led teams that developed AI services and foundation models, then coauthored a 2026 essay on inference time and model learning. As of October 2026, he is a vice president and distinguished scientist in AWS Agentic AI and a professor of computer science at UCLA.

Timeline

  1. 1990s

    Training across disciplines

He studied engineering at the University of Padova and spent a year at UC Berkeley. At Caltech, he completed a PhD in control and dynamical systems in 1996.

  2. 1995–1998

    Research in Udine

He worked as a researcher in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Udine.

  3. 1999

    A prize for reconstruction

His coauthored paper “Euclidean Reconstruction and Reprojection up to Subgroups” won the David Marr Prize at ICCV.

  4. 2000

    Joining UCLA

Before joining UCLA in 2000, he worked as a research associate at Harvard and as an assistant and then associate professor at Washington University.

  5. 2021

    An AI hub with UCLA

At the 2021 launch of Amazon and UCLA’s Science Hub for Humanity and AI, he said the hub would expose university researchers to challenging problems in Amazon’s businesses.

  6. 2022

    An ACM Fellowship

He was elected to the 2022 ACM Fellows class.

  7. 2024–2026

    Applied AI at AWS

He led teams that developed AWS AI services for vision, speech, and language, and for forecasting, personalization, industrial AI, and foundation models such as Amazon Bedrock, Titan, and Q. In February 2026, he and Alessandro Achille coauthored an Amazon Science essay on how reduced inference time can help models continue to learn.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading AWS Agentic AI

His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, and robotics. As of October 2026, he is a vice president and distinguished scientist in AWS Agentic AI and a professor of computer science at UCLA.
