Stefano Panzeri
Stefano Panzeri is a computational neuroscientist working between theory and experiment. His research uses information theory and neural network models to study cortical information processing. He became a nucleus professor in Hamburg in 2021, after working in the United Kingdom and United States. UKE established its Institute of Neural Information Processing under his leadership in 2021. In 2023, he was a partner in BRAINAMICS, where his group models changes in communication between brain areas.

Timeline
-
Before 2021
An international neuroscience career
Before his Hamburg appointment, Panzeri worked in the United Kingdom and United States. Panzeri is a mathematical neuroscientist who develops algorithms to analyze the signals through which neurons communicate.
-
2021
A new Hamburg research role
He became a nucleus professor in July 2021. UKE established the Institute of Neural Information Processing that year under his leadership. The institute connects theoretical models with experimental neuroscience.
-
As of October 2026
Models of neural computation
The institute uses information-theory methods for quantitative data analysis and computational models of neural network function. Panzeri’s aim is to understand the principles of cortical information processing. These methods study biological computation and its connection to behavior.

2023
Model changing brain networks
In November 2023, he was a partner in BRAINAMICS, an ERC project led by Alessandro Gozzi. Panzeri’s group uses mathematical neuron-network models to investigate the causes and function of changing connections between brain areas.
