Researcher

Stefan Roth

Stefan Roth studies computer vision, including optical flow, scene models, and explainable deep networks. He earned an ScM and PhD in computer science at Brown, then joined TU Darmstadt as a junior professor in 2007. With Sun and Black, he published a 2010 optical-flow paper that won the 2020 Longuet-Higgins Prize. The DFG awarded him the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize in 2012; an ERC Starting Grant funded VISLIM, and TU Darmstadt appointed him professor in 2013. An ERC Consolidator Grant backed RED, and he holds ELLIS Unit Director and Fellow roles while visiting Bolzano through January 2027.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2007

    From Brown to Darmstadt

He earned an ScM in 2003 and a computer-science PhD in 2007 at Brown, then joined TU Darmstadt as a junior professor in 2007.

  2. 2010

    Measuring image motion

With Sun and Black, he published “Secrets of Optical Flow Estimation and Their Principles” in 2010. The study traced how objective functions, optimization methods and implementation choices affect optical-flow accuracy.

  3. 2012

    A research prize

The DFG awarded him the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for his computer-vision research.

  4. 2013–2018

    A grant and a professorship

An ERC Starting Grant funded VISLIM, “Visual Learning and Inference in Joint Scene Models,” from 2013 to 2018. TU Darmstadt appointed him professor in 2013.

  5. 2019–2020

    A grant and a prize

The ERC Consolidator Grant backed RED, a five-year project on robust, explainable deep networks in computer vision. In 2020, his 2010 optical-flow paper with Sun and Black won the Longuet-Higgins Prize.

  6. September 2026–January 2027

    Visiting and leading

He is a visiting professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. He leads the Visual Inference Lab; ELLIS lists him as a Unit Director and Fellow at TU Darmstadt.
