Shuicheng Yan
Shuicheng Yan researches computer vision, machine learning and multimedia analysis. He earned his PhD from Peking University in 2004. He coauthored the graph-embedding framework published in the January 2007 IEEE PAMI issue, including Marginal Fisher Analysis for dimensionality reduction. He was then at Illinois, and the paper reports face-recognition experiments. AAAI elected him a fellow in 2022 with a Sea Ltd affiliation. He later became a distinguished practice professor at NUS.

Timeline
-
2004
Doctoral work in mathematics
Yan earned a PhD from Peking University’s School of Mathematical Sciences in 2004. His later research spans computer vision, machine learning and multimedia analysis.

2006–2007
A graph framework for representations
Yan coauthored Graph Embedding and Extensions with five collaborators. Published online in November 2006 and in the January 2007 journal issue, it unifies dimensionality-reduction methods through graphs and their linear, kernel and tensor extensions. Yan’s paper affiliation was Illinois’s Beckman Institute.

2007
Marginal Fisher Analysis
The same paper introduces Marginal Fisher Analysis, using one graph for relationships within classes and another for separation across classes. The authors evaluate it in face-recognition experiments.
-
2022
Computer vision recognition
AAAI elected Yan a fellow in 2022 for computer-vision contributions. At the time, he was affiliated with Sea Ltd. As of October 2026, he holds a distinguished practice professorship at NUS and previously held a Sea leadership role.
