Scott Wiener

Scott Wiener is a California state senator who introduced the frontier AI bill SB 1047 and later helped pass SB 53. From 2011 to 2016 he sat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and he won a California Senate seat in 2016. In 2024 SB 1047 aimed to reduce the potential risks of highly advanced frontier AI models, and Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed it. In 2025 he worked closely with the governor to pass SB 53, which requires developers of powerful AI systems to disclose how they manage safety risks. As of October 2026 he remains a state senator and is running for Congress, with a November runoff against Connie Chan for Nancy Pelosi's seat.
