Rachel Ward
Rachel Ward is a mathematician at the University of Texas at Austin whose research connects mathematics with AI through language models, generative AI and the testing of AI systems. She completed a PhD at Princeton in 2009, worked as a Courant Instructor at NYU, and joined UT Austin in 2011. In 2017–2018 she was a visiting research scientist at Facebook AI Research, and she received the 2016 IMA Prize and the 2022 Peter O'Donnell Distinguished Researcher Award. In December 2024 she co-authored the Phi-4 Technical Report, which describes a 14-billion parameter language model, and in 2025 she gave a talk on generative AI at Oregon State's Milne Lecture. As of October 2026, she holds the Moncrief Distinguished Professorship in Data Science and sits on the Editorial Board of First Proof.
