Michael Schmitz

Also known as schmmd

As of October 2026, Michael Schmitz is Director of Engineering at the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2). In 2012 he co-wrote Open Language Learning for Information Extraction, a paper that the ACL honored with a Test-of-Time Paper Award in 2022. He also co-wrote Molmo and PixMo, a 2024 paper on open vision-language models. In December 2025 he was listed as an author of Olmo 3, a family of fully open language models.
