2005
Gamera for document recognition
At Johns Hopkins, he builds Gamera, an open-source toolkit for document-image recognition. In 2005, he describes its use for building custom recognition systems for historical, non-printed, and non-textual material.
-
2007–2012
Matplotlib lead developer
He joins Matplotlib in 2007 and becomes its lead developer in 2012. His work includes cached transformations, backend simplification, mathtext layout, Python 3 support, and performance improvements.
-
2018
Pyodide for browser Python
At Mozilla, he creates Pyodide in 2018 as part of Iodide, bringing the Python scientific stack to WebAssembly in browsers. In April 2018, he reports that the interpreter and NumPy run in WebAssembly.
-
2024
Microsoft CPython performance
In 2024, he is a Principal Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft on the CPython Performance Engineering Team, which contributes directly to upstream CPython.
-
2025
Faster CPython JIT work
Until 2025, he leads Faster CPython, driving JIT compiler integration into the main interpreter. Under his leadership, Python 3.14 achieves 20%–40% speed improvements over Python 3.10.
