Michael Collins
Michael Collins develops statistical language methods, including parsing and learning algorithms for structured prediction. Collins completed his Pennsylvania doctorate in December 1998. He worked at AT&T Labs–Research from January 1999 to November 2002 and began an MIT appointment in January 2003. His research fields are natural language processing and machine learning. Collins joined Columbia in January 2011. He taught an online natural language processing course in 2013 and provides teaching notes on parsing, tagging, language models, translation and learning algorithms.

Parsing and discriminative learning
Collins published work on discriminative reranking for language parsing in 2000. In 2002 he published a perceptron-based study of discriminative training for hidden Markov models. With Nigel Duffy, he also published ranking algorithms for parsing and tagging.

Structured prediction and language meaning
His shared 2007 publications include structured prediction through the matrix-tree theorem and work with Luke Zettlemoyer on learning grammars that parse to logical form. Other collaborators on the structured prediction paper included Terry Koo, Amir Globerson and Xavier Carreras.
