Researcher

Mauricio Villarroel

Also known as Mauro

Researcher Mauricio Villarroel uses AI and multimodal sensing to track physiological change for clinical care. Born in Bolivia, he earned an engineering degree there and an Oxford doctorate, worked as a research scientist in the Health Sciences and Technology department at MIT and Harvard, and joined Oxford as a postdoctoral research assistant before becoming a Senior Researcher in digital health. He coauthored an automated medical-record de-identification study in 2008 and the MIMIC-II database paper in 2011; at Oxford's 2025 BioEngenuity event, he presented explainable AI for sports-related heart risk. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Oxford, a Fellow of Magdalen College, and principal investigator of LCMT.

Timeline

  1. 2008

    Medical-record de-identification

In 2008, he serves as an HST visiting engineer and coauthors a study on automated de-identification of free-text medical records.

  2. February 2010

    MIMIC-II data release

In February 2010, the MIMIC-II database becomes freely available online with a detailed user guide and data-processing tools.

  3. 2011

    A public ICU database

He coauthors the MIMIC-II paper in 2011, describing a public database of 25,328 ICU stays designed to support critical-care research and evaluation of monitoring algorithms.

  4. 2025

    Explainable AI for athletes

At Oxford's 2025 BioEngenuity event, he presents cardiac electrophysiological models and explainable AI for sports-related sudden cardiac death among adolescents and young adults. His work also targets exercise dosing and cardiac arrhythmia in athletes.

  5. As of October 2026

    Oxford professorship and LCMT

At Oxford, he joins as a postdoctoral research assistant in Data Fusion & Telehealth and becomes a Senior Researcher in Next Generation of Digital Health; his early research leads to the OxeHealth spinout. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, a Fellow of Magdalen College, and principal investigator of LCMT. His group develops AI models with video, wearables, wireless technologies and smartphones to track physiological change, with a focus on cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease.
