Mats Rooth
Mats Rooth is a computational linguist whose work spans language semantics, statistical NLP, and machine learning for speech. He completed a PhD at UMass Amherst in 1985 with the dissertation Association with Focus and published A Theory of Focus Interpretation in 1992. By 1994, he had worked at CSLI/Stanford, AT&T Bell Labs, and the universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen; he led Stuttgart's theoretical computational linguistics chair from 1995 to 2001 and coauthored a 1999 paper on EM-based lexical induction. In 2026, he coauthored machine-learning research on prosodic minimal pairs. As of October 2026, he is a professor in Cornell's Department of Linguistics.
