Researcher

Mark E. Stickel

Mark Stickel developed automated reasoning systems and applied inference methods to problems in AI. Stickel’s journal paper describes PTTP, a Prolog extension for full first-order theorem proving. It adds sound unification, model elimination, and iterative deepening to the inference and search methods. The journal citation gives 1988. Stickel co-authored Interpretation as Abduction with Jerry Hobbs, Paul Martin, and Douglas Edwards. The TACITUS study uses explanatory inference to interpret texts and resolve local pragmatic problems.

Timeline

  1. 1988

    Prolog Technology Theorem Prover

Stickel’s journal paper describes PTTP, a Prolog extension for full first-order theorem proving. It adds sound unification, model elimination, and iterative deepening to the inference and search methods. The paper appeared in 1988.

  2. 1988

    Shared abductive language research

Stickel co-authored Interpretation as Abduction with Jerry Hobbs, Paul Martin, and Douglas Edwards. The TACITUS study uses explanatory inference to interpret texts and resolve local pragmatic problems.

  3. 1992

    Research recognition

AAAI elected Mark E. Stickel as a Fellow in 1992.

  4. 2000

    A Guide to SNARK

Stickel, Richard Waldinger, and Vinay Chaudhri co-authored A Guide to SNARK in 2000. The reasoning kit supports first-order logic with equality and applications in AI, knowledge bases, and software construction.
