Marios Polycarpou

Also known as Marios M. Polycarpou

Marios Polycarpou is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cyprus, where he chairs the board of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence. He has received two IEEE awards: the Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2016 and the Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award in 2023, which recognizes his work on neural networks and learning systems in monitoring and control. After earning computer science and electrical engineering degrees at Rice University, he became a professor at the University of Cincinnati in 1992. In 2001, he joined the University of Cyprus, where he chaired the electrical and computer engineering department until 2008. From 2004 to 2010 he edited the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, and in 2025 the European Academy of Sciences elected him as a member.

  1. 1987–1992

    Degrees from Rice and USC

    He earns computer science and electrical engineering degrees from Rice University in 1987. He then earns M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1989 and 1992.

  2. 1992–2008

    Department chair in Cyprus

    He joins the University of Cincinnati as a professor in 1992. In 2001, he becomes the first academic member of the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Cyprus, which he chairs until 2008.

  3. 2004–2013

    Journal editor and society president

    He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems from 2004 to 2010. He also serves as president of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society from 2012 to 2013.

  4. 2012

    An ERC Advanced Grant

    In March 2012, he is awarded an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council.

  5. 2016

    A Neural Networks Pioneer Award

    He receives the IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2016.

  6. 2023

    The Frank Rosenblatt Award

    The IEEE gives him the 2023 Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award for work on neural networks and learning systems in monitoring and control. In July 2024, he receives it in Japan at the IEEE WCCI 2024 congress, where he also gives the keynote.

  7. 2025

    Joining the European Academy of Sciences

    In 2025, the European Academy of Sciences elects him as a member in engineering. He is the first academic from the University of Cyprus to receive this honor.

  8. As of October 2026

    Chairing the KIOS board

    He is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cyprus and chairs the board of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence.
