Researcher

Maria L. Gini

Maria L. Gini researches robotics, AI and multiagent systems. She earned a Milan physics qualification in 1972, conducted research in Italy and visited Stanford before joining Minnesota as an assistant professor in 1982. Her shared work includes decentralized robot task allocation and learning-based multiagent navigation. AAAI elected her a Fellow in 2008 and gave her its Distinguished Service Award in 2016. She received a shared award in 2012 and later mentoring recognition for collaboration and research-community work alongside her technical contributions.

Timeline

  1. 1972–1982

    Physics, AI research and Minnesota

Gini earned a Milan physics qualification in April 1972, conducted research at Politecnico di Milano and visited Stanford AI Laboratory. It dates her Minnesota assistant professorship from 1982.

  2. 2008–2012

AI recognition and shared agent research

AAAI elected Gini a Fellow in 2008. She shared the 2012 INFORMS Design Science Award for work on economic regimes with Wolf Ketter, John Collins, Alok Gupta and Paul Schrater.

  3. 2017–2018

    Allocating robot tasks and movement

In 2017, Gini coauthored a paper with Ernesto Nunes and Mitchell McIntire on decentralized task allocation with temporal and precedence constraints. In 2018, she coauthored the ALAN multiagent-navigation paper with Julio Godoy, Tiannan Chen, Stephen Guy and Ioannis Karamouzas.

  4. 2016–2019

    Teaching, mentoring and service

Gini received the AAAI Distinguished Service Award in 2016 for society, journal and conference work, mentoring and wider participation in computing. She received further mentoring and service recognition in 2018 and 2019. Her career joins technical robotics research with the education and support of other researchers.
