Researcher

Ludwig Schmidt

Ludwig Schmidt is an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford, where his group has created OpenCLIP, DCLM, and LAION-5B for open-source machine learning. He earned a bachelor's degree at Cambridge in 2011 and an MIT PhD in 2018. A paper he wrote with Chinmay Hegde and Piotr Indyk won a best paper award at ICML in 2015, and Google named him a 2016 PhD fellow. He co-authored LAION-5B, an open image-text dataset that received an Outstanding Paper award at NeurIPS in 2022. Stanford Data Science welcomed him in May 2025, after his work as an assistant professor at the University of Washington and research roles at Anthropic.
