Leon Chua
Leon Chua is a professor emeritus at UC Berkeley whose research includes cellular neural networks and nonlinear circuits. He earned electrical-engineering degrees from Mapúa, MIT, and the University of Illinois, and held faculty posts at Purdue and Berkeley. He proposed the memristor in 1971 and coauthored a 1987 Berkeley report on cellular neural networks with Yang. He received the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2000 and the IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award in 2005. In October 2025, he delivered the MEMRISYS opening lecture in Edinburgh as honorary chair of the Chua Memristor Center.

Timeline
-
1959–1964
Electrical engineering degrees
He earns a B.S. in electrical engineering from Mapúa Institute of Technology in 1959, an M.S. from MIT in 1961, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1964.
-
1964–1970
Faculty posts at Purdue and Berkeley
He joins Purdue as an assistant professor of electrical engineering in 1964, becomes an associate professor in 1967, and joins the UC Berkeley faculty in 1970.
-
1971–2008
The memristor proposal
He postulates the memristor in 1971 as a fundamental passive circuit element linking electric charge and magnetic flux. Researchers at Hewlett-Packard physically realize it in 2008.
