Lee D. Erman
Lee D. Erman coauthored the Hearsay-II account of a speech-understanding system developed in a DARPA research program. Its September 1976 configuration combined independent modules for acoustic analysis, word recognition and phrase interpretation. Erman, Frederick Hayes-Roth, Victor Lesser and Raj Reddy published this account in Computing Surveys in June 1980. The paper describes a blackboard that stores intermediate hypotheses and lets knowledge sources activate one another. Its control strategy selects promising incremental actions under limited processing resources, connecting uncertain speech interpretation with general cooperative problem solving.
