Kyoung Mu Lee

Also known as 이경무

Kyoung Mu Lee is a computer vision researcher and professor at Seoul National University. His research group developed VDSR in 2016, and EDSR won the NTIRE 2017 super-resolution challenge. He earned degrees at Seoul National University and a PhD at the University of Southern California in 1993, then taught at Hongik University until 2003. He was associate editor-in-chief of IEEE TPAMI from 2014 to 2019, and the IEEE Computer Society appointed him editor-in-chief for a term from 2022 to 2024. He served as general chair of ICCV 2019, and in 2022 he received a Samil Prize for his contribution to AI in Korea.

  1. 1984–1993

    Engineering degrees from SNU and USC

    He earns BS and MS degrees in control and instrumentation engineering at Seoul National University in 1984 and 1986. He completes a PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Southern California in 1993.

  2. 1995–2003

    Faculty at Hongik University

    He is a faculty member at Hongik University from 1995 to 2003, after which he joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University.

  3. 2009–2014

    Vice dean and institute director

    He is vice dean for research affairs at the engineering college from 2009 to 2011, then directs the Automation and Systems Research Institute from 2012 to 2014.

  4. 2014–2025

    Editing IEEE TPAMI

    He serves as associate editor-in-chief of IEEE TPAMI from 2014 to 2019. In 2021 the IEEE Computer Society appoints him editor-in-chief for a term from 2022 to 2024. In April 2025, Hong Kong Baptist University's Institute of Creativity hosts an Editors' Series event that features him as the journal's editor-in-chief.

  5. 2016–2017

    VDSR and EDSR networks

    His research group develops VDSR in 2016, a network that uses global skip connections, and EDSR wins the NTIRE 2017 single-image super-resolution challenge.

  6. 2019–2021

    General chair of ICCV 2019

    He serves as general chair of the 2019 International Conference on Computer Vision. In 2021 he becomes an IEEE Fellow.

  7. 2022

    A technology and engineering award

    He receives the technology and engineering award of the Samil Prize in 2022 for his contribution to AI, especially in computer vision in Korea.

    He is a professor in the Department of ECE at Seoul National University.
