Researcher

Kevin Leyton-Brown

Kevin Leyton-Brown researches machine learning, computational game theory and heuristic algorithms. He earned his Stanford doctorate in 2003 and joined UBC as an assistant professor in 2004. With collaborators he studied combinatorial auctions and game representations. His shared SATzilla work with Lin Xu, Frank Hutter and Holger Hoos selects SAT solvers for individual problem instances using learned performance models. The journal paper appeared in 2008; its arXiv deposit followed in 2011. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 2018.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2004

    Doctoral study and UBC

Leyton-Brown earned his Stanford doctorate in 2003 and joined UBC as an assistant professor in 2004. His research interests include game theory, electronic markets and the design of heuristic algorithms. These form complementary lines of AI research.

  2. Research on markets

    Computing with strategic agents

Leyton-Brown and collaborators studied winner determination in combinatorial auctions and computational representations of games. His work includes algorithms, test suites and equilibrium analysis. These projects concern agents whose interests can differ, combining economic models with the computational cost of reaching decisions.

  3. 2008

    SATzilla and algorithm selection

With Lin Xu, Frank Hutter and Holger Hoos, Leyton-Brown published SATzilla in JAIR in 2008. SATzilla selects a SAT solver for each problem instance using empirical hardness models. The portfolio is constructed from component solvers and instance data. The paper was also posted to arXiv in 2011.

  4. 2018

    AAAI fellowship

AAAI elected Leyton-Brown a Fellow in 2018. His research connects statistical models of algorithm behavior with algorithm portfolios and automated configuration. It also connects game theory with markets and multiagent systems. The recognition follows a career that combines formal models, empirical research and shared software artifacts.
