Katia P. Sycara
Katia P. Sycara researches case-based reasoning, autonomous agents and multiagent systems. She earned a doctorate at Georgia Tech and led agent research at Carnegie Mellon. Her group developed RETSINA for coordinating heterogeneous software agents, and she contributed to OWL-S and semantic-service integration. She chaired Agents 98 and the 2003 International Semantic Web Conference program. AAAI elected her a Fellow in 2002, when she also received the ACM/SIGART Agents Research Award.

Education and research
Reasoning and autonomous agents
Sycara earned a Georgia Tech computer-science doctorate and earlier mathematics and engineering degrees. She studies case-based reasoning, negotiation, planning and agents supporting human teams.

Lab project
RETSINA and agent coordination
Sycara’s group developed the RETSINA multiagent infrastructure through shared research programs. The toolkit supports heterogeneous software agents that coordinate in open information environments. Her group works on information fusion, e-commerce and robot coordination.

Building the agents community
She served as general chair for Agents 98 and as steering-committee chair from 1999 to 2001. AAAI elected her a Fellow in 2002, and she received the 2002 ACM/SIGART Agents Research Award. She chaired the 2003 International Semantic Web Conference program.

Connecting services and robot teams
Sycara contributed to OWL-S and software for agent discovery, matchmaking and semantic interoperation. Her lab studies case-based scheduling, design and urban search-and-rescue. These projects connect representations of knowledge with coordination among multiple software agents, robots and people.
