Karl K. Berggren

Karl Berggren is an MIT electrical engineer whose superconducting nanowire research includes hardware for neural networks. He earned a physics BA at Harvard in 1990, joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1996, completed a Harvard PhD in 1997, and became an assistant professor in 2003. His work includes a 2006 single-photon detector, a 2014 nanocryotron logic circuit, and 2021 superconducting hardware for neuromorphic computing. He was elected an AAAS Fellow in 2015 and an IEEE Fellow in 2016; MIT named him a MacVicar Faculty Fellow in 2024. Since 2025, he has served as MIT's faculty head of electrical engineering.

Timeline

  1. 1990–1997

    Harvard physics degrees

He earns a physics BA at Harvard in 1990 and a Harvard PhD in 1997.

  2. 1996–2003

    Lincoln Laboratory to MIT faculty

He joins MIT as a staff member at Lincoln Laboratory in 1996 and becomes an assistant professor in 2003.

  3. 2006

    Improving single-photon detection

In 2006, he and collaborators develop a nanowire detector with 57 percent single-photon detection efficiency at 1,550 nanometers.

  4. 2014

    The nanocryotron logic element

In 2014, he and Adam McCaughan introduce the nTron, a three-terminal superconducting device, and apply it as digital logic in a half-adder circuit.

  5. 2015–2016

    Fellow of AAAS and IEEE

In 2015, AAAS elects him a fellow for contributions to nanofabrication, superconductive quantum circuits, photodetectors, and high-speed superconductive electronics. In 2016, IEEE names him a fellow for nanofabrication and nanomanufacturing in the sub-10 nm regime.

  6. 2021

    Neuromorphic nanowire hardware

In 2021, he and coauthors present a superconducting nanowire architecture for neuromorphic computing and implement a spiking neural network on it to solve linear systems.

  7. 2024

    A MacVicar teaching fellowship

In 2024, MIT names him a MacVicar Faculty Fellow.

  8. Since 2025

    Faculty head of electrical engineering

MIT appoints him faculty head of electrical engineering in January 2025. He is faculty head of electrical engineering at MIT in October 2026.
