Jon Barwise
Also known as Kenneth Jon Barwise, K. Jon Barwise
Jon Barwise (1942–2000) was an American mathematician, philosopher and logician who co-formulated situation semantics, an approach to language and information. He took a B.A. at Yale in 1963 and completed a Ph.D. in mathematics at Stanford in 1967 as a pupil of Solomon Feferman. In 1983 he and John Perry set out situation semantics in Situations and Attitudes, and he returned to Stanford to direct the Center for the Study of Language and Information. He began teaching at Indiana University in 1990, and in 1997 the American Philosophical Association selected him and John Etchemendy for three computer programs that teach formal logic. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999 and died in 2000.
