Researcher

Jie Lu

Jie Lu is a UTS computer scientist whose AI research spans machine learning, fuzzy logic and decision support. She earned a PhD at Curtin University in 2000, became a UTS associate professor in 2004, and became a professor in 2007. Her work ranges from fuzzy transfer learning and concept drift to out-of-distribution detection; her coauthored 2022 NeurIPS paper received an Outstanding Paper award. Her Laureate project advances autonomous machine learning, and her 2025 work includes AI for genomic health and sustainable grain production. As of October 2026, she is a Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean (Research Excellence) at UTS.

Timeline

  1. 2000–2007

    A PhD and UTS professorship

She earned a PhD at Curtin University in 2000. From 2004 to 2006, she served as an associate professor at UTS; she became a professor in 2007.

  2. Since 2010

    Researching changing data

Her research covers fuzzy transfer learning, concept drift, data-driven decision-support systems and recommender systems. Since 2010, she has served as editor-in-chief of Knowledge-Based Systems.

  3. 2019–October 2026

    Autonomous learning for decisions

She became the first UTS academic to receive an ARC Laureate Fellowship in 2019. Her autonomous-learning project advances machine learning for data-driven decisions in complex, uncertain and dynamic environments; it runs from January 2020 to October 2026.

  4. 2022

    When OOD detection is learnable

With Zhen Fang, Yixuan Li, Jiahua Dong, Bo Han and Feng Liu, she coauthored “Is Out-of-Distribution Detection Learnable?” The paper examines when OOD detection is learnable and received a NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper award.

  5. 2023

    An Officer of the Order

She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to engineering and computer science, particularly through AI research and development.

  6. 2025

    AI in health and farming

An Australian Research Council Industry Laureate Fellowship backs her work on machine-learning tools for genomic analysis and early risk prediction in women’s health. She also leads a research hub that develops responsible AI for a sustainable grain industry.

  7. As of October 2026

    Working on data governance

As of October 2026, she is a Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean (Research Excellence) at UTS. In September 2026, she participated as an observer in a UN data-governance working group and supported interoperability between national, regional and international data systems.
