Researcher

Jian Ma

Also known as 马坚

Jian Ma is a computational biologist at Carnegie Mellon University, where his lab builds AI and machine learning methods to study the human genome and cellular organization. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science at Penn State University in 2006 and joined the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty in 2009. His group moved to Carnegie Mellon in January 2016. A 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2022 AAAS fellowship recognized his work on genome structure and function, and ACM named him a 2025 Fellow. As of October 2026, he is the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology and directs the Center for AI-Driven Biomedical Research (AI4BIO).
