Ilge Akkaya
Ilge Akkaya is an AI researcher whose work spans machine learning for cyber-physical systems and language-model reasoning at OpenAI. She earned an engineering degree at Bilkent University and a Berkeley Ph.D. focused on data-driven systems and online learning. At OpenAI, she coauthored a Rubik’s Cube robot-hand paper, the GPT-4 Technical Report, and the o1 System Card. As of October 2026, she is a researcher and team lead in OpenAI’s LLM reasoning research team, which develops reasoning models that power o3 and o1.
Timeline
-
2010
An engineering foundation
She earns a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey.
-
2015–2016
A toolkit for sensor systems
At UC Berkeley, she completes an EECS Ph.D. in 2016 with a thesis on data-driven cyber-physical systems, real-time stream analytics, and machine learning. Her research leads to PILOT, a framework for sensor-network applications based on online machine learning and optimization.
-
2016
A paper wins at IoTDI
The paper “Control Improvisation with Probabilistic Temporal Specifications,” coauthored by Akkaya, wins the Best Paper Award at IEEE IoTDI 2016.
-
2019
A robot hand solves a cube
At OpenAI, she coauthors “Solving Rubik’s Cube with a Robot Hand,” a paper that uses models trained only in simulation to solve the puzzle with a humanoid robot hand.
-
2023
Describing GPT-4
She coauthors the GPT-4 Technical Report, which describes GPT-4 as a multimodal model that accepts image and text inputs and produces text outputs.
-
2024
An o1 safety card
She coauthors OpenAI’s o1 System Card, which describes large-scale reinforcement learning for chain-of-thought reasoning in the o1 model series.
-
As of October 2026
Leading LLM reasoning work
She is a researcher and team lead in OpenAI’s LLM reasoning research team, which develops reasoning models that power o3 and o1.
