Hiroaki Kitano
Hiroaki Kitano developed language and parallel AI research and helped establish RoboCup as a shared robotics research challenge. Kitano published a paper on a speech-to-speech dialogue translation system in 1990 and a paper on that system in IEEE Computer in 1991. He also published a 1993 book on a massively parallel memory-based approach to speech translation. The first official RoboCup games and conference took place in 1997 with IJCAI in Nagoya. Kitano coauthored RoboCup papers that year.

1990–1993
Speech translation research
Kitano published a paper on a speech-to-speech dialogue translation system in 1990 and a paper on that system in IEEE Computer in 1991. He also published a 1993 book on a massively parallel memory-based approach to speech translation.

1993
Developing a shared robot soccer challenge
Minoru Asada, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Kitano and other researchers discussed RoboCup in 1993. They expanded the proposal into an international initiative. The project uses soccer as a common setting for studying autonomous agents, collaboration, reasoning, robotics and sensing.

1994–1996
Parallel AI publications
Kitano and James Hendler edited a volume on massively parallel AI in 1994. He coedited parallel processing volumes with V. Kumar, L. Kanal and C. Suttner in 1994 and 1996.

1997
The first official RoboCup event
The first official RoboCup games and conference took place in 1997 with IJCAI in Nagoya. Kitano coauthored RoboCup papers that year.
