Researcher

HERSCHEL A. RABITZ

Also known as Herschel Rabitz

Herschel Rabitz is a chemistry professor at Princeton University whose learning algorithms use measurement feedback to guide laser pulses. He completed a chemical physics PhD at Harvard in 1970 and joined Princeton's chemistry faculty in 1971. In 1992, he and Judson published a paper in Physical Review Letters on a learning procedure that directs laser pulses. The Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics recognized his learning-algorithm approach in 2003, and in 2005 he told the Daily Princetonian that a computer in the loop can predict the next appropriate experiment. As of October 2026, he is a professor of chemistry at Princeton, where his group develops algorithms to guide experiments.

Timeline

  1. 1970–1971

A chemical physics PhD, then Princeton

He completes a chemical physics PhD at Harvard in 1970. In 1971 he joins the Princeton chemistry faculty.

  2. 1992

    Teaching lasers to control molecules

He and Richard S. Judson publish 'Teaching lasers to control molecules' in Physical Review Letters in 1992. The paper describes a learning procedure that uses fitness data from a laboratory measurement device to direct laser pulses.

  3. 1993–1996

    Chair of the chemistry department

He becomes chair of Princeton's chemistry department in 1993 and serves until 1996.

  4. 2003

    A Willis E. Lamb Award

He receives the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics in 2003, for inventing the learning algorithm approach to the coherent control of quantum phenomena.

  5. 2005

    A computer in the loop

He tells the Daily Princetonian in 2005 that a computer in the loop can predict the next appropriate experiment.

  6. As of October 2026

    A professor at Princeton

He is a professor of chemistry at Princeton University, and his group develops algorithms to guide experiments.
