Hadas Kress-Gazit

Hadas Kress-Gazit is a robotics researcher whose work uses formal methods to create verifiable controllers for complex, high-level tasks. She earned degrees at the Technion and the University of Pennsylvania before joining Cornell in 2009. Her lab developed LTLMoP, a toolkit that helped a robot understand and execute English commands, and she joined an NSF project on automated program synthesis. She is a Cornell professor and Associate Dean for Diversity and Academic Affairs.

Timeline

  1. 2002–2008

    Degrees in engineering

She earns a B.Sc. in electrical engineering at the Technion in 2002, an M.S. in engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering there in 2008.

  2. Since 2009

    Joining Cornell robotics

She begins her Cornell career in 2009 and focuses on formal methods for robotics and automation, including methods that synthesize verifiable controllers for complex, high-level tasks.

  3. 2011

    Robots follow English instructions

Her lab develops the Linear Temporal Logic Mission Planning toolkit (LTLMoP), which lets Cornell's Mae robot understand and execute English commands.

  4. 2012

    The ExCAPE project

In 2012, she joins ExCAPE (Expeditions in Computer Augmented Program Engineering), a five-year, $10 million NSF Expeditions in Computing project to make programming faster, easier and more intuitive.

  5. 2010–2012

    NSF CAREER and DARPA awards

In 2010, she receives an NSF CAREER award. In 2012, DARPA names her among its Young Faculty Award recipients and awards her a $300,000 research grant. In 2012, she co-directs Cornell's Autonomous Systems Lab and researches explanations for failures in high-level autonomous robot tasks.

  6. 2018–2023

    RSS chair and board president

She chairs the RSS program in 2018 and serves as president of its board from 2019 to 2023.

  7. 2021

    IEEE RAS Fellowship

In the 2021 class, she becomes an IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Fellow for contributions to automated control synthesis and formal methods for robotics.

  8. Since September 2024

    Professor and associate dean

She is the Geoffrey S.M. Hedrick Sr. Professor in Cornell's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Associate Dean for Diversity and Academic Affairs. Her three-year term begins in September 2024.
