Guido Gerig
Guido Gerig is a computer science professor whose image-analysis methods support clinical imaging studies, and as of October 2026 he is Professor Emeritus at NYU Tandon. He became an assistant professor at ETH Zurich in 1993, and in 1998 he became Taylor Grandy Professor at UNC Chapel Hill, where student teams he led first developed ITK-SNAP, a free segmentation tool. At the University of Utah he established the Utah Center for Neuroimage Analysis, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering elected him a Fellow in 2010. From 2016 to 2021 he chaired NYU Tandon's computer science and engineering department, and the MICCAI Society gave him its Enduring Impact Award in 2023. In 2023 he led a paper in which a generative model turned synthetic masks into realistic microscopy images for training a segmentation model.

Timeline
-
1993–1998
An assistant professorship at ETH
He becomes an assistant professor at ETH Zurich in 1993, a post he holds until 1998.
-
1998–2007
Neuroimage labs at UNC
He becomes Taylor Grandy Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998, and he launches the UNC Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratories. There, student teams he leads develop ITK-SNAP, a free tool for segmenting structures in 3D and 4D biomedical images.
-
2007–2015
The Utah Center for Neuroimage Analysis
He becomes USTAR Professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah in 2007. There he establishes the Utah Center for Neuroimage Analysis.
-
2010
An AIMBE fellowship
The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering elects him a Fellow in 2010. Its Fellows are nominated by peers and represent the top 2% of the medical and biological engineering community.
-
2016–2021
Department chair at NYU Tandon
He chairs the computer science and engineering department at NYU Tandon from 2016 to 2021.
-
2019–2023
IEEE Fellow and MICCAI award
He is named an IEEE Fellow in the class of 2019. In 2023 the MICCAI Society gives him its Enduring Impact Award, and his research supports clinical imaging studies with image analysis methods for segmentation, registration, atlas building and shape analysis.
-
2023
Synthetic data for microscopy
In 2023 he leads a paper on microscopy image segmentation. A generative model turns synthetic masks into realistic microscopy images, which form a dataset for training a segmentation model.
-
As of October 2026
Professor Emeritus at NYU Tandon
He is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Engineering and of Biomedical Engineering at NYU Tandon.
