Gal Kaminka
Gal Kaminka researches coordinated robots and artificial social intelligence. His USC doctoral work ended in 2000 and was followed by a CMU postdoc. He joined Bar Ilan’s faculty in 2002 and worked with collaborators on robot teamwork. He co-founded BladeRanger and served as its CTO from 2016 to 2022, and worked with collaborators on decisions in biological and robotic swarms. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 2025 for goal recognition, collaborative robots and social intelligence in multi-agent systems.

Timeline
-
2000–2002
Monitoring multiple agents
Kaminka pursued doctoral study at USC from 1995 to 2000 and wrote a thesis on execution monitoring in multi-agent environments. He completed a CMU postdoc under Manuela Veloso from 2000 to 2002. This work established a research focus on understanding and coordinating agent behavior.
-
2002–2007
Robot teamwork at Bar Ilan
He joined Bar Ilan’s faculty in 2002. He and Sarit Kraus worked on Teamwork in Theory and Robots from 2004 to 2007, alongside robot-team design work with Veloso and Brett Browning. The projects studied methods for cooperative autonomous robots.
-
2016–2022
Robots and swarms
Kaminka co-founded BladeRanger and served as its CTO from 2016 to 2022, developing autonomous solar-installation cleaning robots. He also worked with collaborators at several universities on the Swarm Smarts project from 2018 to 2022, studying decisions in locust and robot swarms.

2025
Recognition of social intelligence research
AAAI elected Kaminka a Fellow in 2025. His contributions include plan and goal recognition, collaborative robots and socially intelligent multi-agent systems. These topics connect the interpretation of others’ actions with decisions made by teams and swarms.
