Gail Carpenter
Also known as Gail Alexandra Carpenter
Gail Carpenter is a mathematician who co-developed adaptive resonance theory with Stephen Grossberg. She completed a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1974, and she has worked in Boston since 1974. In 1991 she and Stephen Grossberg published ARTMAP, a self-organizing neural network for supervised real-time learning and classification. She received the Gabor Award of the International Neural Network Society in 1999 and became the first woman to receive the IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2008. She was named an IEEE Fellow in 2013; as of October 2026, she is an emeritus professor of mathematics and statistics at Boston University.
