Researcher

Fabio Viola

As of October 2026, Fabio Viola is a researcher at Google DeepMind, working on machine learning and reinforcement learning. Before joining DeepMind, he worked as a research engineer in London's visual-effects industry, and in 2017 he helped create the Kinetics dataset for human action recognition in video. He holds a PhD in engineering from Cambridge, where he studied computer vision under Andrew Fitzgibbon and Roberto Cipolla, and in 2018 he co-authored a Nature paper on vector-based navigation. He co-led Codebase & Parallelism work on Gemini 1.0, a multimodal model family whose report appeared in December 2023. He was also named among the contributors to Gemini 1.5 in 2024 and Gemini 2.5 in 2025.

Timeline

  1. 2017

    The Kinetics video dataset

Before joining DeepMind, he works as a research engineer in London's visual-effects industry. In 2017 the Kinetics dataset for human action recognition in video appears on arXiv, and he helps create it.

  2. 2018

    Grid-like representations for navigation

He holds a PhD in engineering from Cambridge, where he studies computer vision under Andrew Fitzgibbon and Roberto Cipolla. In 2018 he co-authors a Nature paper on vector-based navigation using grid-like representations in artificial agents.

  3. 2020

    Value-driven hindsight modelling

In 2020 NeurIPS publishes Value-driven Hindsight Modelling, which he co-authors with Arthur Guez, Theophane Weber, Lars Buesing and four others.

  4. December 2023

    Codebase work on Gemini 1.0

He co-leads Codebase & Parallelism work on Gemini 1.0, a multimodal model family whose report appears in December 2023.

  5. March 2024

    Work on Gemini 1.5

In March 2024 he is named among the contributors to the Gemini 1.5 report.

  6. As of October 2026

    Researcher at Google DeepMind

He is a researcher at Google DeepMind, working on machine learning and reinforcement learning. The Gemini 2.5 report, submitted in July 2025, names him among its contributors.
