Researcher

Eric Wieser

As of October 2026, Eric Wieser is a senior software engineer on the AlphaProof team at Google DeepMind. His work joins AI with formal mathematics in Lean, and he is one of Mathlib's maintainers. He has maintained open-source software since 2017, including NumPy, and he has been formalizing mathematics since 2020. He earned a PhD at the University of Cambridge on formalizing Clifford algebras. In November 2025 he co-authored a Nature paper on olympiad-level formal mathematical reasoning, whose AlphaProof system solved three of five non-geometry problems at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad.

Timeline

  1. Since 2017

    Maintaining NumPy

He has maintained open-source software since 2017, and he is one of Mathlib's and NumPy's maintainers.

  2. Since 2020

    Formalizing mathematics

He has been formalizing mathematics since 2020, and with Utensil Song he writes a paper on formalizing Clifford algebras in Lean 3.

  3. 2024

    AlphaProof at the IMO

At the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, AlphaProof solves three of five non-geometry problems, a result the Nature paper reports.

  4. November 2025

A Nature paper on formal reasoning

The Nature paper Olympiad-level formal mathematical reasoning with reinforcement learning appears in November 2025, and he is one of its co-authors.

  5. As of October 2026

    Senior engineer on AlphaProof

He is a senior software engineer on the AlphaProof team at Google DeepMind, and his PhD at the University of Cambridge formalizes Clifford algebras.
