Eric Poe Xing
Eric Poe Xing researches statistical machine learning, probabilistic models and AI computing systems. His career includes Rutgers and Berkeley doctorates ending in 1999 and 2004 and a CMU faculty appointment in 2004. He led a machine-learning and health center in 2015–2016 and helped found Petuum in 2016, the year of his AAAI fellowship. He became MBZUAI president in January 2021. His later work includes shared model research, including biological foundation models.

Timeline
-
1999–2004
Two doctoral disciplines and CMU
Xing completed doctoral study in molecular biology and biochemistry at Rutgers ending in 1999, then a Berkeley computer-science doctorate ending in 2004. He became a CMU assistant professor in September 2004. These fields meet in his research on learning and biological data.
-
2005 and later research
Models and learning systems
Xing taught a CMU course on probabilistic graphical models from 2005. His research covers statistical methods for learning and reasoning, alongside large-scale computing architectures. His work connects modeling uncertain relationships with the practical systems needed to run learning algorithms.
-
2015–2016
Health research and a software company
Xing founded and directed CMU’s Center for Machine Learning and Health from March 2015 through July 2016. He became Petuum founder and chief scientist in 2016. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 2016.
-
2021 and later
University leadership and new model projects
Xing became MBZUAI president in January 2021. His work includes AIDO biological foundation models and other model projects.
