Emily Pitler
Emily Pitler is a Google computational linguist who helped build tool use for the Gemini models. She earned a BS in computer science at Yale in 2007 and a PhD in computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013. In 2019, she led a team that worked on more robust language-understanding models. In 2023, she co-led tool use for Gemini 1.0, and in July 2025 she was among the authors of the Gemini 2.5 technical report. As of October 2026, she works at Google.
Timeline
-
2007–2013
A Penn computer science PhD
She earns a BS in computer science at Yale in 2007 and a PhD in computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013. The IGERT program names her a trainee for work that improves the computer parsing efficiency of languages with crossed dependencies.
-
October 2018
Staff research scientist at Google AI
She co-writes the blog post Google at EMNLP 2018 as a staff research scientist at Google AI Language.
-
2019
Robust language-understanding models
She speaks at MLconf 2019 in New York City on representations from natural language data. She leads a team of researchers and engineers that works on making language-understanding models more robust.
-
2020
New textual entailment protocols
She co-authors New Protocols and Negative Results for Textual Entailment Data Collection at EMNLP 2020. The paper compares alternative crowdsourcing protocols for natural language inference data.
-
2023
Tool use for Gemini 1.0
She co-leads the tool-use work in the Gemini 1.0 report, which presents Google's multimodal model family.
-
July 2025
Author on Gemini 2.5
She appears among the authors of the Gemini 2.5 technical report, first submitted to arXiv in July 2025.
-
As of October 2026
Computational linguist at Google
She is a computational linguist at Google.
