Dong Xu

Also known as Xu Dong

Dong Xu is a professor at the University of Hong Kong, and his research covers computer vision, multimedia and machine learning. He earned his B.Eng. in 2001 and PhD in 2005 from the University of Science and Technology of China. He held faculty posts at Nanyang Technological University and then the Chair in Computer Engineering at the University of Sydney. A co-authored work with his former student Lixin Duan won the Best Student Paper Award at CVPR in 2010. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2016 for work on machine learning for visual recognition and domain adaptation.

  1. 2001–2007

    Degrees and a Columbia postdoc

    He receives his B.Eng. in 2001 and PhD in 2005 from the University of Science and Technology of China. He works as a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University from 2006 to 2007.

  2. 2007–2015

    Faculty at Nanyang Technological University

    He joins Nanyang Technological University as an assistant professor in 2007 and becomes a tenured associate professor in 2012.

  3. 2010

    A CVPR best student paper

    His co-authored work with former PhD student Lixin Duan wins the Best Student Paper Award at CVPR in 2010.

  4. 2015–2022

    Chair in Computer Engineering

    He takes up the Chair in Computer Engineering at the University of Sydney in November 2015 and holds it until August 2022.

  5. 2016

    An IAPR fellowship

    The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2016 for contributions to machine learning for visual recognition and domain adaptation.

  6. 2018

    Fellow of the IEEE

    He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2018.

  7. Since 2022

    Professor at HKU

    He joins HKU as a tenured professor in August 2022. His research interests include computer vision, multimedia and machine learning. In 2026 he gives a talk on diffusion-based approaches for Scalable Vector Graphics Generation and Robot Manipulation at the IAPR/IEEE Winter School on Biometrics.
